MORDOVIAN SCIENTISTS HAVE FOUND A WAY TO REDUCE THE COST OF LASER ONCOTHERAPY

Specialists from Mordovian State University named after N.P. Ogarev have developed a new method of laser therapy for malignant tumors. According to the new technique, the laser optical fiber is used multiple times, allowing for the reduction of radiation power, which results in significant cost savings.

During the procedure, a layer of metal-containing nanoparticles is applied to the surface of the patient's biological tissue, after which laser radiation is applied. At this moment, the surface temperature is monitored using a thermal imager.

Experiments on mice have shown, for example, that therapy using a suspension of ytterbium-containing nanoparticles and laser radiation with a wavelength of 980 nanometers exhibits anti-tumor effects against the malignant melanoma B16 tumor. For instance, on the 13th day after the therapy, the degree of tumor growth inhibition in animals treated with the nanoparticles and laser radiation was two to three times higher than in animals receiving therapy without the use of particles (only laser radiation).

The research is conducted as part of the strategic project “Photonics, Functional Electronics, Digital Solutions, and Artificial Intelligence” under the Priority-2030 program of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, as well as the implementation of a grant from the Russian Science Foundation.
