Association of Craftsmen and Designers has been established in Mordovia to develop creative industries

In the modern economy, creative industries are becoming a powerful driver of development, forming new growth points and creating unique competitive advantages for regions. Mordovia, with its rich cultural heritage, is actively integrating into this trend today, combining centuries-old craft traditions with modern design approaches.

Fatima Gatieva, Adviser to the General Director of Mordovia Development Corporation, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta about the prospects for the development of creative industries and the work of the regional Association of Craftsmen of Folk Arts and Designers.

- Fatima Sultanovna, an industry meeting "Workshop 2025" was recently held in Saransk, bringing together masters of folk art crafts and designers. How do such events help the development of the region's creative industries?

- Such events are a powerful driver for the development of the creative sector. Firstly, they motivate craftsmen to integrate into the region's economy through the status of self-employed or sole proprietors. Secondly, it is a unique platform for the synergy of traditional craft and modern design, where collaborations with commercial potential are born. Ultimately, this is a direct contribution to the growth of the share of creative industries in the region's GRP.

- You are the head of the Association of Craftsmen of Folk Art Crafts and Designers of the Republic of Moldova. What are the key goals and objectives of this organization?

- The main objectives are to popularize traditional crafts and Mordovian design through the media, exhibitions and cultural events. We also strive to involve the public, businesses, and NGOs in the preservation and development of folk art. Another important area is to promote the participation of craftsmen in regional and federal exhibitions, including international projects.

- What joint projects are planned by Mordovia Development Corporation and the Association of Craftsmen of Folk Arts and Designers?

- One of the upcoming projects is to provide artisans with an exhibition space in a Business incubator. This is a great opportunity for craftsmen to present their work to potential clients and partners.

- How do you assess the potential of Mordovia in the field of creative industries? Which areas are the most promising?

- The potential is high. Firstly, we are the national republic closest to Moscow, which opens up great opportunities for promoting cultural projects, from design and music to national cuisine. Secondly, we are already developing IT areas such as game and application development. Finally, the active cultural life of the region speaks to the prospects in producing.

- Are there any examples of successful promotion of Mordovian artisans at the federal and international levels?

- Yes, there are such examples. One of them is the projects of Artur Salyakaev. We are talking about the "Mordovian Christmas Tree toy", "Mordovian stained oak", as well as the launch of porcelain production. His company, “INCRUA”, became a finalist in “Znai Nashih” contest and participated in SPIEF 2025. This is a vivid example of how local brands can make themselves known on major international platforms.

- What government support measures are available for artisans and designers?

- Now craftsmen can take advantage of state support measures provided by the Entrepreneurship Support Fund. They can also participate in exhibitions and competitions, both regional and federal. Hopefully, new tools will appear in the future, especially after the recent discussions at the SPIEF.

- On June 24, a strategic session on the development of the creative economy was held under the leadership of Mikhail Mishustin, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation. What is the significance of this event for Mordovia and what is expected in the republic from the outcome of this meeting?

- Now all regions, including Mordovia, are awaiting concrete decisions and instructions based on the results of this session, which may open up new opportunities for the creative industries. I am sure that some of these initiatives will be useful for our republic, creating additional incentives for the development of creative entrepreneurship, supporting talents and attracting investments in the creative sector.

- How do you see the future of the creative industries of Mordovia in the medium term?

- All regions have an ambitious goal – to increase the share of creative industries in GRP to 6% by 2030. Now we have this indicator – 2.3%, so there is a lot of work. But we have potential, and I believe that with the active development of the community, we will achieve this goal.

- What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and craftsmen who want to develop in this field?

- The creative economy begins with action. Don't expect perfect conditions — test your ideas right away, even in a small format. Apply for sole proprietorship or self-employment to gain access to grants and exhibitions. Surround yourself with like—minded people - joint projects grow faster. Mistakes are inevitable, but each one is a step towards success. Believe in your idea: today's modest start tomorrow can be a big breakthrough.
