Mordovian brands: from traditions to geographical indications

To date, 6 geographical indications (GI) have been registered in the Republic of Mordovia, confirming the uniqueness of local products. However, work in this direction continues in the region, and a number of well-known regional brands are still awaiting official recognition.

One of these brands is “Mordovian Vodka”. This brand has gained recognition far beyond the region. "Mordovian vodka" has long been a popular souvenir that tourists take away from Mordovia.

The history of this brand goes back to 1899, when “Saransky” Distillery was founded, one of the oldest enterprises in the industry, which turned 125 years old last year. During this time, the plant has not only preserved its production traditions, but has also confidently implemented modern technologies, becoming a recognized leader in its field. The company's products have received more than 600 awards from prestigious Russian exhibitions, occupy leading positions in federal and regional markets, and demonstrate high growth rates.

A whole line of “Mordovia” vodka is produced in the republic, which, due to the use of the name of the Republic of Mordovia and the long history of its production in the region, has become popularly known as “Mordovian Vodka”. In addition to high-quality Mordovian alcohol, artesian water of multiple purification, pure vegetable raw materials growing in Mordovia and other natural ingredients are used in the manufacture of “Mordovian vodka”.

The use of classical Russian technology for the preparation of alcoholic beverages, careful quality control of raw materials and products throughout the entire technological process ensure high quality and wide popularity of products in Mordovia and beyond, and has formed a certain reputation, which is largely related to geographical origin.

The registration of a geographical indication will be a natural recognition of the uniqueness of this drink and will help strengthen its position in both the Russian and international markets.
